What you'll learn

Stage 1 — Foundations

The first section introduces the Gregg alphabet and the logic behind the system. You will learn the strokes, their proportions, writing directions, and the core principles that make shorthand work.

Stage 2 — Making it Functional

Lessons in this stage combine explanation with immersive reading exercises. You will repeatedly translate passages written in shorthand, gradually building familiarity with how strokes combine into real words and sentences. The goal here is recognition. You will read the same material multiple times before advancing so the patterns become automatic.

Stage 3 — Writing

Only after extensive reading practice will you begin writing shorthand yourself. This sequence is deliberate. Writing too early often leads to poor stroke habits that limit speed later. By first training your eye to recognize correct forms, you develop an internal model of the system before producing it. Once writing begins, you will already understand how shorthand should look and flow, allowing you to build speed correctly.
